Film Opening Credits Analysis

Production Company

Production House

Movie Title

The background is dark blue to create a vibe of mystery. And the title is shining to get more attention and to show that the superhero is the bright shining out of a dark background (which could be referring to the evil and unknown like the villains).

Main Cast

The background of these 3 characters is the same colour (black which helps understand that the these characters are part of the same side (in this case the good side).
They are also only one name per shot because they are part of the main cast and this helps emphasise the relevance of the characters.

The reason for the red to be added as the name of James Franco comes up foreshadows the fact that he is going to be related with the evil theme, which in this case is his dad and later on in the third movie ends up being consumed by his evil thoughts and he turns into the real villain.

Supportive Cast

Opposite to what i said about the characters that are part of the main cast, the supportive cast characters are not as relevant to the plot so they get to share shots, which takes relevance away from them.

Establishing shot

This vivid mixture of colourful buildings and transports give the movie an instant comedic/happy vibe and doesn't make the audience feel tension about what is about to happen.

Tracking Shot

The sudden hand coming out of nowhere and hitting the window tries to sort of wake the audience up for an exciting scene in which Peter is running to try to catch the bus.

Story Development

The story development shot shows the audience the first bit of concrete story telling that they are going to see in which they are focusing on Mary Jane's face as well as having the class in the background with the teacher explaining what is going to follow up.

Sci-Fi Conventions

Sci-Fi Conventions

Setting- place: Outer space, other planets or alternative versions of the earth

Setting- time: This is on an alternative timeline which contradicts historical records or hasn't happened yet like the future.

Film Techniques: Special effects, futuristic technologies or scientific elements.

Narrative elements: Conflict between good and evil, as well as the development of technologies such as robots and spaceships.

Symbolism: Futuristic props that show the advance in scientific discoveries

In our film opening, we will be adding futuristic props and technology because we are intending to follow a space orientated Sci-Fi movie opening. Bit similar to Star Trek.

3rd Film opening analysis

3rd film opening analysis

Now i will analyse Captain america: civil war.
This is the last film opening i will be analysing.

This film starts with the avengers team fighting terrorism in Lagos, Nigeria. And how this is a superhero film, it's going to have a hybrid genre between action and science fiction. However, the very begininng shows us the classic marvel intro which his really characteristic in marvel movies.

The first shot shows how the terrorists break in the laboratory in which they are trying to steal a biological weapon. And they make their way in with a really heavy garbage truck. But we also get to see the main heros analysing the situation with some really advanced gadget. These gadgets show how the sci fi is applied as we don't have anything similar to them in real life.

The location is revealed at the very beginning of the movie because they place the name of the city they are in in big white letters with the city in the background (i couldn't find footage of this).

The characters are presented in the exact same way as they were presented in the first movie i analysed, they are omnipotent over their enemies who are just ordinary human terrorists.
This fits perfectly with the genre because the intention of science fiction is to present us with unbelievable story lines and characters such as superheros. This is also a really big stereotype in superhero movies.

The pacing is always changing between fast and slow due to the change in intensity and due to the different shots that need to be portrayed depending on the action taking place.

How i mentioned earlier, the only text that we are shown is the big white letters revealing that they are in Lagos, Nigeria and i'm afraid i couldn't find any footage of it. This text doesn't really have a secondary purpose apart from informing the audience where these characters are.

There is fast cuts being used during the action scenes in which we see the heroes fighting and when the pace is fast too. There is certain props and actions which require CGI, such as any magic hand movements that Scarlet witch does, captain america's shield, hawkeye's arrows, falcon's wings, etc.
There is also a classical music soundtrack in the background which helps pace the scene with it's speed and intensity changes.

2nd Film opening analysis

2nd Film opening analysis

Now i will do an analysis of the opening scene of Star wars Episode VII: The force awakens.
I had to change my genre due to major group issues and now i have to analyse 2 other films with sic fi genre. (The first film i analysed was still valid because it was a sci fi and action hybrid film).

As we are talking about a star wars film, we all know that the beginning is always presented in the same format. This format tells the audience what has happened prior to the movie and sets the tone for the first scenes. This crawls are used in every single star wars movie and is the most characteristic intro of all time (personal opinion).

After this intro, we get to see props and characters such as the new droid BB-8. This straight away shows how the movie is from the science fiction genre, due to the fact that droids and robots made in real life don't have AI to work independently. Props that can lead us to think this is a sci fi film can be lightsabers, laser guns and spaceships. The lightning of this scene is very dark which causes a serious and mysterious tone to be set.

The narrative is linear. The story shows how an old man gives a younger man a sort of USB which can be connected to a droid to be presented with the location of Luke Skywalker, but the empire leaded by the sith lord Kylo ren is trying to get that USB in order to find and kill Luke Skywalker.
And once the empire arrives, they start fighting their way to that USB and they end up killing the old man and kidnapping the man who received the USB. The issue is that the droid has got the USB now and he has escaped to the most "urban" place he could find in the planet trying to escape from the empire. This story is told in present time, and there is no flashbacks or anything that could suggest this isn't linear.

The location is given by certain clues which you can only understand if you are a star wars fan. They are in a planet called Jakku. The clues are the amount of sand around the place and the sand dunes, as well as the people that live there.

The characters are presented in two sides of the force, light (good) and dark (bad).
From the light side we have Poe Dameron, BB-8 and Lord San Tekka. They are in the light side off the force with the goal of taking the USB with Luke's location to the resistance. Meanwhile, in the dark side we have Kylo Ren, Captain Phasma and all the clones that fight for the first order/empire, and they are fighting to get the USB so they can kill Luke. But in-between we get to see a disturbed and confused clone who we later realise is Finn, one of the main characters. Finn is presented as an interesting character because clones are normally 100% loyal to the dark side, but Finn does not want to fight for them. This sci fi story shows us a lot of characters and a story line which we can only think of as an out of this world story such as star wars or star trek. But i think every character is stereotypical except for Finn, who is a very innovative character for Star wars as a franchise.

The pacing of this scene is really varied. It starts kind of slow at the very first, but soon it turns into a fast paced massacre from the first order. But it doesn't take long for it to go back to slow so we can see the moment in which Lord San Tekka talks with Kylo Ren before getting murdered. And that is how this opening scene goes, it keeps changing between fast and slow pace.

And how i previously mentioned, the very beginning of the movie presents a very big amount of text in the classic star wars font and the very characteristic gold color that is presented in every star wars opening. This text is presented right after the blue colored "a long time ago in a galaxy far, far away...". The gold colored text is presented as a crawl in a black background and it moves upwards (away from the audience). This text sets the tone and story of what's going on and gives a reason for the movie to happen.

The scene uses fast cuts when they are presenting the battle/massacre but starts using more slow shot/reverse shots and therefore slower cuts. There is a big amount of CGI used because how the movie is a sci fi movie, we get to see unreal props such as laser guns shooting and light sabers.
And all the added special effects add a great "realism" to the scene (by realism i mean that even though is CGI, it makes it look and sound more realistic). Also, the soundtrack in the background has a really big role for the pace of the movie. The movie moves as fast as the music does, but also we can hear a change on the volume of the music depending of how intense the shot is (if is dialogue between two people then is low, but during battle is really loud.

1st Film opening analysis

1st Film opening analysis

In this task i will be analysing three action movie opening scenes.

First, i will be analysing the opening scene of the movie The Avengers age of Ultron
The film with a shot of two of the main superheroes (Hawkeye and Black widow) driving a car in the middle of the battle while they are being chased by enemies. And suddenly, other superheroes appear and start fighting enemies with their characteristic super powers which is a pretty fast way to re-introduce the characters to the main plot or scene. This shot changes heights while the camera moves around the cars which are the main point of action,  this shot is a classic shot used in the opening scenes of various superheroes sequels because is an exiting, fast and intense way of getting the characters back into action .

And in the following shot we can also see how they have done an epic shot of all the superheroes in the same frame. Also, they are all showing off their characteristic super powers in the same frame to stand out from each other and help the audience distinguish between each superhero. This is a well know and well used technique in the industry of superheroes movies.

There is also many props being used in the scene such as cars, weapons, motorcycles, a shield, a bow, many bluetooth ear pieces, etc. This are all well placed and definitely have a good quality and fit perfectly to each character/shot.
Also, there is a non-voice communication (as well as a spoken dialogue) between the superheroes in which they are fighting and they collaborate with each other without speaking. But this is not a hybrid genre scene. Every single shot and second of the scene just shows action and all the cliches/characteristics of an action film.

How we can see in the background of every scene, they are in a mountain which is full of snow. This could be a clue of their location because it doesn't snow in every country and there is countries where there is no mountains. This would make man average person think that it could be somewhere near Russia. Later in this movie we get told that this is happening in a country called "Sokovia" which i would believe was a created country for movie purposes and doesn't really exist. But we know that this country was mean't to be in Europe and how i mentioned before, it was near Russia.

The characters are presented as super humans which are able to overpower all of their inferior enemies. This is because they are mean't to be the strongest and most powerful human beings in the universe. This can be called stereotypical because many superheroes are presented like this in their respective movies. The only time a hero got really hurt was by a super villain when the super villain was being presented in the movie.

The pacing of this opening is really fast. Every scene lasts a short amount of time due to the camera moving so fast through the action This has an impact on the viewer which makes them feel the intensity of the situation.

There is many fast cuts that help the intensity rise and has a positive impact on the audience. And to that, they added a fast paced background song which also helps set the pace of the editing. There was CGI used in many scenes, such as whenever The hulk appears because he is literally made of GCI, the tanks, the arrows shot by Hawkeye, etc. This has an effect of amaze on the audience, because it shows objects and beings which could never be made in real life, look real.

The music used how i mentioned earlier is just a background soundtrack which does help set the tone and pace of the scene. But the sound effects don't get overshadowed by the music, they are louder and very well placed. And the sound effects (when played with a good stereo) can make the audience feel like they are in the middle of the battlefield.
